PEI Non-Profit Organizations Awarded $1.8M to Develop and Strengthen Mental Well-Being

The PEI Alliance for Mental Well-Being is thrilled to announce that $1.8 million in grant funds will be awarded to 11 PEI non-profit and charitable organizations to support the delivery of projects and initiatives that can improve mental well-being outcomes for individuals living on PEI.

“The demand for support from organizations was significant,” said Karen Cumberland, Executive Director of the Alliance. “We received 55 grant applications with a total of $9 million in funding requested.”

“We are proud to announce these 11 organizations as this year’s grant recipients and feel that the activities and outcomes of these initiatives can lead to collective positive impact in communities across PEI.”

The funding is being distributed through the Alliance’s Focusing Action for Positive Change Grant Program, which offered up to $50,000 for single year projects or up to $300,000 for multi-year projects spanning up to three years.

Approved Grant Recipients

The funding awarded will support the delivery of projects and initiatives representing many sectors, communities, and beneficiaries across PEI.

Projects approved for funding demonstrate alignment with the Alliance’s mandate and are within the outlined parameters of the Grant Program. The grant funds provided to the project teams will be used for training and professional development, program introduction or enhancement, and research, evaluation, and dissemination activities.

What is the Grant Program?

The Focusing Action for Positive Change Grant Program is an annual funding mechanism established to support PEI non-profit and charitable organizations to deliver projects and initiatives that can improve mental well-being outcomes for people living on PEI.

All funded projects through the Alliance’s Grant Program focus on one or more of the evidence-based factors that can develop and strengthen resilience and improve mental well-being, and align with the objectives of the program:

To develop and strengthen the factors that build individual, family and community resilience;
To generate and amplify cross-sector and cross-PEI initiatives to align and integrate preventative approaches;
To support capacity-building and raise awareness of the connection between resilience and mental well-being; and
To assess, learn, evaluate and share resilience-building best practices and impact.

The Adjudication Process

An independent Peer Review Committee is responsible for evaluating project applications against specific and clear Grant Program criteria, as outlined in the Alliance’s Focusing Action for Positive Change Grant Program Policy.

Following the Peer Review Committee’s extensive, multi-step review and analysis of the applications submitted final recommendations for funding were presented to the Alliance’s Board of Directors for approval.

The PEI Alliance for Mental Well-Being

The PEI Alliance for Mental Well-Being exists to create the conditions for positive change that advance resiliency and improve the mental well-being of all Islanders. The Alliance was launched in November 2021 as a response to community-informed recommendations with a specific intention to focus and accelerate activities at the prevention end of the spectrum. Day-to-day, the Alliance serves as a backbone support, providing leadership, coordination, and communication for the PEI mental well-being landscape.
