Building Pathways to Resilience

Our training and development initiatives provide powerful insights into the science of brain development including resilience, protective factors and adverse childhood experiences. You’ll also discover how the science of brain development can be integrated into projects and initiatives to enhance mental well-being.

All of our training opportunities are delivered in a supportive environment designed to build trust and foster valuable connections among participants.

Our Brain Story PEI Pilot

Our Brain Story PEI Pilot represents two years of work by the Alliance to create a new, positive, and evidence-based dialogue on PEI about mental health and well-being.

The pilot program ran from December 2023 to June 2024, with four cohorts. More than 114 participants from 31 community organizations, the Charlottetown Police Services, Student Well-Being Team, the Public Schools Branch, UPEI, and Holland College completed the training.

Building a Common Language

This comprehensive 35-hour training provided valuable insights into the science of resilience and brain development. The goal was to equip participants with knowledge and insights they can build into their prevention-based programming and services. We also wanted to build a common language around the science of brain development, so we are all working from a shared understanding of resiliency, toxic stress, protective factors, and other important concepts.

Creating Opportunities for Connection

The training was also designed to foster connections and spark collaborative ideas amongst participants working to support the mental well-being of people on PEI. As such, there were plenty of table discussions, engaging activities, and other ideation opportunities embedded into the design of each day. Each cohort participated in a comprehensive course evaluation, which will help shape enhancements and future delivery of similar training.

Understanding the Science

The content delivered was based on decades of research and science, compiled by the Center on the Developing Child (Harvard University) and the Palix Foundation/Alberta Family Wellness Initiative.

Participants learned how early childhood trauma creates a lifelong trajectory for poor mental and physical health outcomes. They also explored how protective factors (e.g. physical activity, literacy, social connections, etc.) can be built and strengthened throughout life to help children and adults navigate life’s challenges.

Each cohort participated in a comprehensive course evaluation, which will help shape enhancements and future delivery of similar training.
